As pop artist Barbara Januszkiewicz has it: "Creative thinking inspires ideas. Ideas inspire change." The inspiration for The Cover-Up came from group improvisations and discussions. Themes emerged. Characters and scenes started taking shape. Then, a few students went away and wrote a play. Our final performance text comes from about one intense week of changes: cobbling together drafts, creating transitional material, and letting the characters and the story find their shape in rehearsal. It is my sincere belief that people engage in artistic creation are changed by their experience. PLaywrights and actors become chroniclers of our time, inspiring change in the world by challenging our ideas of reality. It has been a pleasure and an honour to witness the creative thinking that went into this play, and to watch it - and the young artists shaping it, and being shaped by it - change from day to day. Let us hope that the events at Beechville Academy [the play's fictional school] inspire us to change our world, and ourselves, for the better.
