Arts at the Halifax Grammar School

Prep School

Students explore their creative talents through visual art, music, and drama, beginning in Junior Primary. Highlights include Grade One's Monet Picnic at Point Pleasant Park - a celebration of their study of Impressionist masters. In Grade Two, Picasso, Kandinsky and Mondrian come alive as the students try their hand at Cubism and Abstract Expressionist projects.

In music, students begin with the basics and progress to reading and writing music, using the recorder, in Grade Four. All students in Grades Three and Four are members of the Prep School Choir, which performs at school events, as well as in the community.

Drama is an important part of the Prep School, beginning with our youngest students. Great traditions include Senior Primary's Peter Rabbit, Grade Two's Medieval Feast, and the Grade Four's musical production of children's favourites, such as Treasure IslandThe Wizard of Oz, and Robin Hood.

Middle School

From pop art printmaking to landscapes of the Group of Seven, Middle School students are exposed to a wide variety of art forms and comprehensive art history. A school-wide art show is held each spring, featuring pieces from students at all grade levels.

Instrumental music is a thriving part of the arts curriculum, in the studio and onstage. Students can perform as part of the Concert Band, Jazz Band, and other small ensembles.

Students perform in a major dramatic production each year, ranging from the works of Shakespeare to classics such as Little Women.

Senior School

Opportunities for creative expression are available as part of the curriculum, and outside of the classroom. Students can study visual art as part of the IB Program and, each year, produce incredible projects ranging from sculpture to painting, photography, metalwork and fashion design. A school-wide art show is held each spring, featuring pieces from students at all grade levels.

In media arts, students have the opportunity to study experimental filmmaking, documentary filmmaking, narrative fictional filmmaking and webpage design. An annual film gala and awards night is held each year.

Instrumental band is available to students up to Grade 12, as a classroom elective and extra-curricular opportunity. Students perform in our concert bands, jazz bands, and smaller ensembles, and as part of the Senior School musical.

Each year, the Senior School produces a Broadway-style musical. Recent favourites include GreaseGuys and Dolls, and Anything Goes.

A Student's Perspective

"Having a dedicated performing arts space to learn, to collaborate, to compose and, most importantly, to take risk in, will foster a creative confidence that students will carry with them long after their years at HGS."
