Gab Duguay'18 accepted into Princeton

Congratulations to Gab Duguay'18 on his acceptance into Princeton!
The Grammar community would like to congratulate Gab Duguay on his acceptance into Princeton, an Ivy League university in Princeton, New Jersey. Gab started at Grammar in Grade Nine. Gab is an accomplished debater and is Grammar’s 2017-18 Head Boy.

Halifax Grammar School (HGS): What was your reaction to being accepted into Princeton?
Gab Duguay (GD): Pure surprise. When I opened the letter, and I read “Congratulations” in a bright orange font, I was overwhelmed with excitement. I chose to open the letter at Debate club practice: where I could share this achievement with Mr. Josh Judah, who I immediately hugged me upon receiving the news. Josh has been a coach, mentor and friend to me in my time at Grammar, and this would not have been possible without him. I would also like to thank the entire staff of the Halifax Grammar School, who have inspired me to strive for excellence and dedicated enormous amounts of time to support me.

HGS: What do you plan to study?
GD: I hope to major at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, with a certificate in the History and Practice of Diplomacy

HGS: What lessons/experiences did you learn from your time at Grammar that you will take to university and beyond?

GD:
When I came to Grammar, it felt like a community rather than just a school. Loosely quoting from Andrew Machum’14 Valedictorian address:“the teachers at our school are not just academic instructors, but advice givers, mark negotiators, storytellers, entertainers, and above all, friends to their students.”

Dr. Mike Butt set me off on a frenzy of reading great classic works and history works. Ms. Sandra Baigent taught me to believe in my own writing ability, and how to write a proper research paper. Dr. Janet Friesen, Ms. Jennifer Cochrane, and Ms. Ann Marie MacNeil exposed to the very best prose and poetry and encouraged me to find my own voice. I was humbled by the amazing accomplishments of my peers, which seem to occur daily.  All of these experiences make me who I am, and I am enormously grateful for the experience.

I know that no matter where in the world I go, I will have ties to the Grammar community and that the endless generous spirit of the parents, alumni, and friends of the School will follow me.
