HGS Alumni John Corbit'04 has study published in "Nature"

Mother-son research team, HGS Alumni John Corbit'04 and Tara Callaghan, PhD, have recently co-authored an article published in Nature, an international weekly journal of science.

"I came to Grammar for his last two years of high school. There was an initial challenge to adapt to the curriculum, but I had a lot of great teachers and the school quickly became an enriching experience," says John, a current PhD student at Simon Fraser University, about his Grammar experience.

Acamedia certainly runs in John's family - his father is a researcher with interests in an area of psychology different from his own, and his mother is a professor in the Department of Psychology at St. Francis Xavier University.

"My mother and I have found ourselves in very similar academic fields. In the paper published in Nature, our interests have aligned to look at the development of fairness across seven diverse societies. The importance of this work is to understand the origins of a human sense of fairness. Understanding fairness will help us understand how human cooperation is maintained, which is a cornerstone of our societies," explains John, who has been able to travel and conduct studies in India and Peru. "More specifically this study examined the development of a preference for equal distribution of resources, and an aversion to unequal distributions."

John credits his Grammar education as a excellent foundation in his career in academic research.

"I think a big component of my time at Grammar that prepared me for post secondary education was the culture of excellence amongst both students and educators. This culture could certainly be seen in academic achievement but also extended outside of the classroom to athletics and other extra curricular activies."
