Head Boy Richard Waller has won the prestigious D&R Sobey Atlantic Scholarship to attend Queen’s School of Business undergraduate Commerce program. The scholarship is valued at $75,000 per student over four years and is awarded for academic ability, creative and original thinking, involvement in school and community activities, and leadership qualities. Established in 1999 by Donald Sobey and his son Rob, both alumni of Queen's, the scholarship is open to students from Atlantic Canada attending their first year of the program.
“At this point I hope to eventually study law, but I wasn’t sure what path to take to that. I was thinking about things like commerce, engineering, or perhaps an arts degree in philosophy. I enjoy math and critical thinking, so I was looking to combine those. I visited Queen’s in November and from talking to professors and students there, I knew it would be my first choice. I know from Grammar that the relationship with your teachers is important, and at Queen’s commerce the class sizes are small. Also it’s got one of the highest numbers of clubs of any university in Canada. Students I talked to told me about a guy who decided he wanted to start a surf club, and he received university support for it.”
Only six D&R Sobey Atlantic Scholarships are awarded each year. Among the materials Richard included in his application to the school and for the scholarship were three essays drawing on his experience with student council and coaching basketball.
