Prep School Closing

On Thursday June 13, the Prep School Closing took place at the McNally Auditorium at Saint Mary's University. Piper Jessica Bain led the way as the entire Prep School population entered the hall. Once all had been welcomed by Linden Gray, the festivities began with the awarding of certificates to the Junior Primary class. As always, the curly ribbons proved to be a big hit! This was followed by the Prep School Choir's rendition of "Come Along with Me". Awards for good citizenship were presented by Constable Illya Nielson of the Halifax Regional Police. Lovely teddy bears and certificates were given to Elizabeth Merrimen JP, Graeme O'Brien PRJB (helped to the stage by his big brother Ethan M1, as he was sporting a new cast on his foot), Elyse Johnson PRB, Ben Robertson P1G, Sonja Smith P1M, Abby Steeves P2G, Emmett Ritenour P2L, Jessica Warr P3M, Pearla El-Rabahi P3Mac, Lily Reid P4C, and Cara Seo P4GO.  Farewells were offered to two ASP helpers, Hannah Adams and Brianna Dunn, to Katie Gallivan who has taught Prep Two this year, and to Marie Turner who is retiring at the end of the month. Mr. Whynot was recognized for completing fifteen years at HGS, while Mme. Henderson was recognized for her thirty years of service to teaching French in the Prep School.

Awards for Sportsmanship were given to Olin Bailly P4 and Sophie Smith Stewart P4, and their classmates Meredith Leckey and Aya Kalai were recognized for the excellent progress they have made this year. The Prep Four High Achievement Awards were presented to Rebekkah Celikkanat and Ayman Najaf.  This year, there were two winners of the Castalia Award for excellence in the arts. Presented by Mrs. Elvira Gonella-Welch, these prizes were given to Dimitri Hanias P4 and Grant Keefe P4. The Ian Spencer Award for all round excellence in the Prep School was awarded to Ryan Berry P4. There was a new award this year - the Marjorie Cooper Award - which recognizes a student in Prep Four who, while reaching his or her highest academic potential in the Prep School, also demonstrates the qualities of integrity and compassion, respect for others and a passion for learning. The award also includes a $500 scholarship towards tuition in Middle One. The first recipient of this award is Lara Jollimore-Behie.

As always, Ms Messenger's slide show and Prep Four retrospective were extremely well received. Once the Prep four class had been "roasted" by their teachers, and received their certificates, Middle School ties and a copy of Peter Pan as a reminder of this year's drama production, they joined together to sing "Go the Distance" and then undertook their traditional Latin recitation. Mr. Addley offered closing remarks and then capably manned the school bell as the countdown began. Well done, everyone. Have a wonderful summer!
