Senior Boys Win Coal Bowl

The HGS Varsity Boys Basketball Team was in New Waterford from February 2 to 9 participating in the 32nd annual Coal Bowl invitational basketball tournament. As well as striving for excellence on the basketball court, we experienced the unique Cape Breton culture. Some of our activities included square dancing, visiting with students from the school in their classrooms, experiencing the Miners Museum, bagging groceries at the local Sobeys, attending classes at the school, and performing in a concert.

At the end of the week, we wrote a test on Cape Breton to see how much we had learned. David Morency won $100 for having the highest mark from our team. Jake MacDonnell received $200 for having the highest overall mark in the entire tournament.

The week was highlighted by our victory in the finals over the Charlottetown Rural Raiders, a team we had lost to earlier in the tournament. Alfred Burgesson received a first team All Star for the tournament and Patrick Morris was named tournament MVP. We were welcomed and embraced by the New Waterford community, which is passionate about this tournament. It has been a highly rewarding experience for all involved, and we hope to return next year.
