HGS has welcomed some new faculty members this year.
Ms. Kelda Smith will be teaching grade seven and grade nine math. She received her degree in Chemistry and Biochemistry from Dalhousie University. She subsequently held positions in chemical research and retail management. She then returned to the University of New Brunswick to pursue an education degree. After graduation, Ms. Smith was employed by UNB to co-teach Developing Numeracy and chemistry. She has been involved with math enrichment programs in elementary and secondary schools, and has taught math, chemistry and physics at the secondary level. Ms. Smith is excited to be teaching at HGS and is looking forward to using a variety of experiences to extend mathematical understanding, including the use of mathematical puzzles and weekly challenge problem sets. In addition, she will be organizing the Middle School Science Club, sharing her enthusiasm for scientific principles and practices. Ms. Smith also plays the viola with the Bluenose Quartet.
Ms. Jennifer Cochrane is an International Baccalaureate (IB) teacher of secondary English and Drama and comes most recently to us from Canadian International School in Hong Kong. Jennifer has been teaching for more than 10 years and is currently teaching grade 10 English. Ms. Cochrane strives to integrate technology into her teaching for the 21st century learner and she is excited about the year ahead and the Grade 10 English program, which encourages students to take risks, and to think with a global perspective.
Mr. Shane Joseph will be teaching grade six science, grade seven biology and physics, and grade eight physics. He will also be coaching the junior boys soccer team and the Middle School hockey team. Shane graduated from St. Francis Xavier University with his education degree in 2008, and has been teaching in Montreal at Lower Canada College for the last four years.
HGS is also pleased to welcome Katie Gillivan ’05 who is teaching grade two while Ashlea Hawker is on maternity leave.
