Kiran Sivakumar Accepted to UCLA

UCLA is the most applied-to university in the United States. This year it received 72,626 applications for its 2012 freshman class. The great majority of those applicants were disappointed, but 15,455 were offered admission. Only 3,143 of those are not US residents -- if you are calculating that as a percentage, you should have 4.3%

Grammar’s Kiran Sivakumar is part of that happy 4.3%. Kiran will enter the College of Letters and Science, most likely to major in chemistry. He hopes to study medicine, and is delighted to enter UCLA, one of the world’s top ranked universities whose pre-med program is considered “very, very good”.

Part of the application process was writing an essay about influences on his goals and aspirations. In this essay and in person, Kiran credits Halifax Grammar School as being a big influence on him. In particular, Kiran cites teacher Peter Beazley (http://on.fb.me/ImoCKF) as key to his interest and proficiency in chemistry. “He’s a really good teacher. The hands-on work that we do in his class is one of the main reasons I love chemistry.”

Kiran’s other loves are badminton and music. Perhaps reflecting that passion, he has consistently been a top performer in the HGS badminton program, and plays two instruments in two bands!

You will be missed, Kiran. We hope you will send some pictures from that sunny campus from time to time.
