Here at Grammar, we recognize athletic participation as a way for students to grow and learn the values of self-discipline, teamwork, and leadership skills. Athletics, both competitive and recreational, are a cornerstone of the educational process and experience. We believe students deserve the opportunity to participate and compete at levels appropriate to their skill and interest.

Athletics at Grammar

The goal of Grammar's Athletics program is to provide a range of opportunities for student-athletes to develop a lifelong passion for maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle. We recognize that extra-curricular participation is beneficial for the overall development of our students, which is why we provide athletic programming for students in Junior Primary to Grade Twelve. Whether on the court, pitch, ice, or trail, student athletes learn the values of self-discipline, teamwork and leadership. We provide opportunities for our student-athletes in both competitive and recreational competitions, locally, nationally and internationally.

The Halifax Grammar School has membership and competes for championships in the following sport governing bodies:

  • Nova Scotia Schools Athletic Federation (NSSAF)
  • Canadian Accredited Independent Schools (CAIS)
  • HRCE Junior High Sports
  • Metro Independent League (MIL)

Facilities

Within our Physical Education, Outdoor Education and Athletics programs, we provide our students and student-athletes opportunities to learn and grow by utilizing the facilities and resources within the Halifax community. During practices, games and classes our programming allows us to use not only Grammar facilities but also Saint Mary’s University Homburg Center and Dauphinee Center along with nearby parks, tennis courts, and fields.

Highlights

Our Senior Boys and Girls basketball teams host the Grammar Classic, a 12 team basketball tournament held annually at the start of December.

As a member of CAIS, Grammar attends and hosts national soccer and basketball tournaments. These competitions provide our student-athletes the opportunity to compete against other independent schools within their respective sports.

At the end of the year, we recognize Grammar Athletic Excellence by highlighting our student-athletes at our annual Athletics Banquet. All students and families are invited to celebrate the success of our Athletics programs.
