Students at the Grammar School are grouped into one of four Houses
Acadia
Glooscap
Privateers
Royals
These Houses are the main focus for how friendly, light-hearted student competition in a wide range of school activities is organized in:
academics
intramural sports
clubs
community service
Many student activities throughout the year are organized by Houses to promote the broadest possible participation in Middle and Senior School and, at various times, from Primary to Grade 12.
All faculty and staff members at Grammar are also aligned with a House and participate in their own spirit-raising activities.
Student Experience at the Halifax Grammar School
Halifax Grammar School believes clubs and extra curricular programs are an essential component of a complete student experience. Students are strongly encouraged to join any of the existing clubs at HGS or start one of their own.
Taking part in a club allows students to have fun and interact with other students who have similar interests.
Clubs In recent years, students have started clubs that focus on:
Chinese culture
Gardening
Robotics
Politics
Chess
Knitting
Urban art
Film
Climate change
Two-Spirit and LGBTQIA+ awareness
Mindfulness
Competition Students can also choose to become a part of one of Grammar's more formal organizations that competes against other schools. Students can develop their talents and passions with an eye to compete in:
The Debating Team
Model United Nations
The Math Club
Trips & Adventures Field trips, class trips, and student exchanges are a traditional part of the Grammar Experience. Places our students have gone in the past include:
Port Royal
Louisbourg
Ottawa
Italy
Greece
China
Thailand
Quebec
Guatemala
Kejimkujik National Park
...and more!
Most students in Grades 9-12 have the opportunity to take advantage of an international experience if they choose.
