HALIFAX GRAMMAR MARKS 60TH YEAR WITH NEW FACILITY AND HISTORIC DONOR CONTRIBUTION

Halifax, Nova Scotia (September 4, 2018) – It is not a typical September for students returning to the Halifax Grammar School this year. When the doors open for classes on September 6, more than 500 students from Grammar’s Prep, Middle and Senior schools will be unified onto a single Tower Road campus for the first time since 1997.

Driven by this compelling One Grammar vision, the school’s Engaging Excellence capital campaign was officially launched last September, with a goal of raising $10 million.

“We set out to build a school that brings our family back together under one roof and create an inspiring space that enriches our four-pillar curriculum of Academics, Athletics, Arts, and Altruism,” said Grammar Headmaster Steven Laffoley. “As much we owe so much to so many, this singular achievement of excellence would simply not have happened without the tenacity and generosity and vision of Scott McCrea and his family.”

McCrea’s was one of the first pledges of support. The $2.2 million family donation is one of the largest gifts to an independent school in provincial history.

“Our family is very proud to be part of the One Grammar Campus because we believe community-based schools provide students and families with choices in education,” said Scott Armour McCrea, current parent, Campaign co-chair and CEO of Armour Group Ltd.  “By investing in independent schools, we are helping youth develop the knowledge and skills they’ll need to create opportunities in the province well into the future. The success of the Engaging Excellence Campaign will also allow broader access for families, which we believe is an important part of building greater communities.”

Designed by Halifax-based Architecture 49 and built by Armour Construction Ltd., the Tower Road extension opening coincides with the school’s 60th anniversary. The One Grammar Campus boasts a state-of-the-art learning commons, a double gymnasium, science labs, a media arts room, and collaborative workspaces that support 21st Century learning. The heritage building blends seamlessly with the modern design elements that feature complementary materials and the notable architecture includes three arches in the front representing the unification of the three schools.

The project’s capital costs of $14.5 million include construction, land purchases, furniture and equipment, and professional services. This is the the largest community investment in an independent school in the history of Nova Scotia.

“We know that investments in student education will create the most significant and positive impact on the future of our communities” said Doug Reid, Campaign co-chair and Grammar parent. “We owe a tremendous thank you the McCrea family, the faculty, staff, parents, students, past parents, alumni and our extended community for believing in our youth and supporting our school.”
