Cross Country Highlights

The 2017 HGS Cross-Country Running Team had a good season this year. Highlights from earlier in the season included individual race victories by David Waller (the Citadel Zone Championships, one Metro High School Series race, and the Capital Region Championships), Bekkah Celikkanat (the Citadel Zone Championships), and Charlotte Langley (one Metro High School Series race) as well as the junior boys team winning the Citadel Zone Championships. Six HGS teams competed at the Capital Region Championships, and five finished in the top 5 in their respective categories to qualify for the NSSAF Provincial Championships. This ties for the most teams HGS has ever qualified for cross-country provincials in one year. It was also the most teams that any school in the province had at provincials this year. Amongst high schools, HGS was only one of four schools in the province to qualify all four of its intermediate and senior teams. At the NSSAF Provincial Championships (for which all junior highs, private schools, and division 1, 2, and 3 schools in the province could qualify), the junior boys and intermediate girls both placed 7^th and the intermediate boys, senior girls, and senior boys all placed 8^th in their divisions. The senior boys' team placed 2^nd at regionals but went on to be the top Capital Region team at the provincial meet. Aside from a large number of athletes involved, the coaches were happy to see the improvement in many of our athletes and the frequent personal best performances in races.
