Grade Twelve student Jack Farrell has been awarded the prestigious National Scholarship from the University of Toronto (U of T).

The National Scholarship is presented annually to ten students from across the country who demonstrate superior academic performance, original and creative thought, and exceptional achievement in a broad context. They excel in academic pursuits, demonstrate enthusiasm for intellectual exploration, and involve themselves in the lives of their schools and communities. The scholarship covers tuition and incidental fees for four years, and provides full first-year residence support.

“I was very excited and surprised to receive the scholarship,” says Jack. “It is a big deal for me and my family.”

Attending Grammar since Grade Primary, Jack was involved in a wide range of activities, including debating, film club, and band. One of his most recent accomplishments was winning the National Debate Championship with his debating partner, Ben Gillis, with whom he will be sharing valedictorian duties with at graduation.

Jack credits many of his coaches and teachers for making these activities rewarding and fun.

“Debate has made me a much more confident speaker. Josh Judah, has been a terrific coach and friend. Likewise, the Media Arts program is great. Mr. Tim Beers has been incredibly supportive, and has helped me make movies, even outside of class,” says Jack. “Playing in the school band since the sixth grade, Ms. Dawn Hatfield puts in an enormous amount of work in allowing me to have fun playing music.”

Jack says that the challenging IB program, in combination with the extra-curricular activities offered at Grammar, has been a solid foundation for university.

“The extracurricular opportunities have taught me a lot,” says Jack. “Grammar always rewarded me for pursuing my passions, like debate, the film club, science, and music.”
