Prep School

The Prep School is a special place where children are challenged to try new things, to discover and to learn in a secure, supportive environment. Students enter the Prep School in our Primary Division and proceed to Grade 4 in our own unique version of a Junior School. It’s all about great beginnings, small classes, and the individual attention the children receive to guide them through these important formative years.

Stimulating Independent Thinking
The nurturing and academic development begins with our Primary teachers in small classes. Students are encouraged to ask questions and to explore newly discovered ideas. In a warm, supportive Prep School environment, the children receive the individual attention they need to journey confidently through the Prep School.

Developing a Sense of Community
At Grammar, Prep School students develop enduring loyalties and begin to see themselves as part of a larger HGS family. All Prep students are members of one of the four Student Houses – Acadia, Glooscap, Privateers, and Royals – and participate in regular school-wide spirit raising activities. Senior students and faculty, for example, work with our little ones in the “Snuggle Up and Read” program, spending time each week listening to the children read.

Nourishing the Creative Spirit
The Prep teachers work very closely as a team. Caring, dedicated teachers create a family atmosphere in which everyone works hand in hand fostering personal growth and learning. All Prep students share in opportunities for enrichment, including Creative Arts and Choral Music, as well as regular Physical Activity classes.

From the very first day at the Grammar School, students are challenged to meet our high academic standards, but within a caring and supportive environment. The value of reading, writing, and other core skills continue to be fundamental to a Prep School education. We seek, above all, to instil in our students a sense of curiosity and a taste of the satisfaction that comes from performing at their best.
The Junior Primary class is part of the existing Primary Program and a key component of the existing Prep School – Junior Primary to Grade 4. Our JP class is integrated with the existing classes in a program with an overall coordinator and a team approach to teaching and learning.  We have staffed the Junior Primary with an 8 to 1 ratio, consistent with NS Community and Family Services regulations. These faculty members are ECE Specialists.
