Students at the Grammar School are grouped into one of four Houses: Acadia, Glooscap, Privateers, and Royals. The Houses are the main focus for friendly, light-hearted student competition in a wide range of school activities, including academics, intramural sports, clubs, and community service. Many student activities throughout the year are organized by Houses to promote the broadest possible participation in Middle and Senior School and, at various times, from Primary to Grade 12. All faculty and staff members at HGS are also aligned with Houses and participate in their own spirit-raising activities.
When the students arrive in September, they are greeted by their Heads of School and welcomed by members of their class and House. At the opening School Assembly, the four Houses are introduced to students and every student begins to develop a sense of belonging and identification with their House. Early in the term, the School holds a massive House Rally to allow students to demonstrate their House spirit and loyalties.
The four Houses are all identified with the history and traditions of Nova Scotia. Each House has its own unique identity, consisting of a House motto, crest, flag, and cheer. Members of each House aspire to honour the “characteristics” of that particular House. While you are at Grammar, your triumphs will earn you House Points, under a positive rewards system measuring student participation in school-sponsored activities. Students and staff may earn House Points for a range of contributions to school life, including academics, athletics, arts, community service, and cleanliness or “good housekeeping.” At the end of the year, the House with the most points is awarded the House Cup in a rousing, spirit raising closing assembly.
