Student Experience

Grammar students keep their minds and bodies active with a variety of extra-curricular opportunities, organized by staff, parents, and students. Many of these activities are repeated annually while some are spontaneous, one-of-a-kind events characteristic of a very lively creative community. Presently, planned extra-curricular activities in the Prep and Middle Schools include drama, choir, science, art, writing and environmental clubs; as well as chess, instrumental music, skiing and skating days, and goofy house games. To expand the students’ learning experience, class trips to Port Royal, Louisbourg and Ottawa have been a traditional part of the Prep Four and Middle One and Two programs.

The Senior School program typically includes such activities as Amnesty International, Duke of Edinburgh’s awards program, chess, national mathematics and physics competitions, provincial and national debating and public speaking tournaments, drama, choir, computer club, “Free the Children” fundraising, house games, instrumental music, winter carnival and our school yearbook, The Grammarian. Several classes have field trips, such as the German and French class trips, annual class trips to Europe, Quebec and Kejimkujik National Park, and international student exchanges. Most students in Grades 9-12 have the opportunity to take advantage of an international experience, if they choose.

The purpose of the Award is to provide annual seed money (or a grant) to fund a project or series of projects. The Award intends to encourage and support student initiatives, particularly those demonstrating fresh thinking and entrepreneurship. Proposed projects may be local, regional, or global in their focus. The Feed Nova Scotia initiative and the Global Awareness Conference are prime examples of such worthy projects. All proposals must be written in form and provide a clear case for support.
