H1N1 Update 1

Where students flourish and teachers inspire

Health Update

H1N1 Communication

As the school year begins, so too does the fall influenza season and with it the heightened concern regarding the H1N1 Influenza Virus.  While health officials are hopeful that the vast majority of cases will be mild in nature, a level of preparedness is prudent and expected of schools.  Halifax Grammar has immediately put in place contingencies to deal with the influenza season.

On August 19, 2009, the Public Health Agency of Canada released an update of their Recommendations for Schools that includes measures to prevent contraction and spread of the virus and we will act upon these recommendations.  Halifax Grammar will begin periodic cleaning of frequent touch surfaces such as doorknobs, faucet handles, computer keyboards, handrails and desktops throughout the day.  Hand sanitizers have been installed in convenient locations throughout both campuses and soap dispensers in bathrooms will be routinely checked to ensure they are filled.

Students will be routinely briefed in classes and assemblies of the need to thoroughly wash their hands and to practice the prescribed sneezing/coughing etiquette, covering their mouths and noses with their sleeves.

Parents are strongly urged to again review the symptoms of influenza and keep their sons and daughters home should they experience, fever and /or cough, and one or more of the following: unusual tiredness, headache, muscle or joint aches, sore throat, vomiting and diarrhea in children less than 5 years of age.  It is important to note that people with mild cases do not necessarily exhibit all symptoms.  Still, we urge you to keep your children home to prevent the spread of the virus.  You will note that people are no longer being advised to remain home for seven days.  Instead, people are asked to remain home until they are symptom free and feel well.  The School Heads will be working closely with teachers to assure students home ill with mild cases can stay connected and up to date with their studies and we will continue to monitor and report student absences as advised by health officials.

Based on the recommendations of the Nova Scotia Department of Health and the Public Health Agency of Canada we do not anticipate the closure of schools will be a consideration. Halifax Grammar School will continue to follow all recommendations communicated by the respective ministries as the influenza season unfolds.
