Congrats to our Loran Scholar
Halifax Grammar School is proud of Priya Koilpillai, S3, for becoming a Weston Loran Scholar.

The largest Priya for Loranundergraduate merit scholarship in the country, it is offered to 30 graduating high school or CEGEP students each year on the basis of character, service and leadership potential. It is not a reward for past achievements but an investment in the future. Renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study at one of 24 partner universities, it comprises an $8,000 annual stipend and a matching tuition waiver, a summer program with funding up to $7,500, one-on-one mentorship and participation in the community of Loran scholars, in total worth up to $75,000.

Staff of the foundation work closely with Loran scholars during their university years to foster their development as leaders. Since the first Loran scholar graduated in 1994, there are now 276 Loran alumni, 11 of whom have been selected as Rhodes scholars. They are active in diverse fields of endeavour.

The Loran Award selection process is the most rigorous in the country and involves multiple rounds of personal interviews. The awards are granted on the basis of character, service and leadership potential.

Priya has been attending Grammar since Primary and says she wouldn't change the last 13 years for anything. She has contributed immensely to our student experience and to our greater community.

Priya co-founded "Youth for a Hunger Free Nova Scotia", established a library at an orphanage in India, co-coordinated this year's Big Bunch, volunteered with the IWK Children's Hospital, among other great achievements. Her projects have had an impressive impact on our school, city, province, and our global community

We are fortunate to have Priya as our Head Girl. Her leadership has been inspiring.  She is off to Queen's University in September where she hopes to study Science and Global Development. Eventually, she would like to study medicine!

Thank-you, Priya, for being a member of our HGS Family!
