Halifax Grammar School has a well established and successful track and field program for middle and senior school students. The school has won eleven straight NSSAF Provincial Track & Field Championship banners ("A" Division in 1999 and 2000, Division 4 in 2001, and Division 3 in 2002-2009).
Practices are held throughout the spring at the synthetic track at Saint Mary's University and also in Point Pleasant Park. The team is coached by Peter Beazley with the assistance of Sandra Baigent.
Athletes can set HGS Track & Field Records when competing in any track and/or field meet for which the coaches accept the results as accurate. The athlete does not have to be representing the school for a record to be set. Records may be set during the school year or during the summer between two consecutive years of enrollment. Records set in the summer after the "school closing" are recorded in the athlete's age class for the following year. Records are only recorded for NSSAF T&F events. No distinction is made between results from meets held at dirt tracks and results from meets held at synthetic tracks. When comparing fully automatic timing (electronic timing) results with hand-timed results, the hand-timed results will be corrected as follows: (a) for all events shorter than 400m, add 0.24 seconds to the hand-timed result, (b) for all events of 400m or longer, add 0.14 seconds to the hand-timed result.
