Athletics

Athletics are central to the Grammar School philosophy of promoting the fullest development of our students. From the Primary years to graduation, the aim of athletics is, first and foremost, to develop a healthy attitude towards sports and a commitment to personal fitness. We seek to develop positive attitudes towards athletics and a lifelong commitment to fair play, love of the game, cooperation, respect for others, and honouring commitments to the team. The School provides all students with opportunities to engage in physical activity.

We encourage full participation by our students to enable them to progress from Prep School to Senior School to higher levels of play. In the Prep School, all students enjoy Physical Education classes and participate in friendly games and activities. Prep Students also have the opportunity to join Prep Sport and Running Clubs. At the Middle School level, in additional to regular physical education classes, students can play on school teams to further develop their fundamental skills through regular practice and scheduled inter-school games. Sports in Middle School include soccer, touch football, basketball, ice hockey, downhill skiing, tennis, curling, badminton, cross country skiing, swimming, and track and field.

At the Senior School all Grade 10 students take Physical Education classes and HGS team sports become more competitive. For a Senior School of our size, Grammar offers a remarkable array of opportunities to participate on teams at all levels. We boast one of the most experienced and talented coaching staff in the region. Many HGS faculty contribute as interscholastic coaches, contributing to the all-round athletic development of our students. At the high school level some of the sports we offer include: soccer, cross country, basketball, skiing, golf, and track and field. Students at Grammar enjoy rare opportunities to compete at regional, provincial, and national levels through our membership in the NSSAF, ACIS (Atlantic Conference of Independent Schools), and CAIS (Canadian Association of Independent Schools). We consistently rank as one of the top schools in many Nova Scotia sports.
