The class of 2008 might be interested to know that one of their classmates from the early year is cycling solo from Vancouver to Halifax to raise funds for the UK charity Help for Heroes, which provides support to injured men and women of the armed forces. Ben Matthews’08 spent two “wonderfully happy” years at HGS in grades 1 and 2 between 1996 and 1998 while his father was on a military exchange with the Canadian Navy in Halifax.
Apparently, his time in Canada made such an impression on Ben that he has spent the last 10 months of his gap year working the early shift in a bakery in UK in order to raise sufficient funds for his Trans-Canada trip. His goal is to have raised 10,000 GBP (over $15,000) to finish at the Commonwealth War memorial in Point Pleasant Park on August 24 with his parents, brother and sister there to see him over the finishing line. After university (Human Biology at Loughborough) Ben hopes to embark upon a military career within the elite Royal Marines.
Best of Luck, Ben!
