Where students flourish and teachers inspire

Homestay Program

The Grammar School is an IB World School, and attracts interest from famlies across the globe. Over the past number of years, HGS has hosted students from a wide variety of international locations, such as Germany, Korea, Bermuda, Japan, China, the Philippines, and many others. With growing interest in our Senior School from the international community, we are seeking to formalize and expand our homestay program.

Have you ever considered hosting an international student? Do you have some extra space in your home that might be suitable? Perhaps your son or daughter would benefit from sharing the experience of meeting a student from another culture?

The School places international students with carefully selected families who will provide room and board, and parental supervision. Appropriate HGS parents and past parents are considered whenever possible; however, we sometimes approach other families who have been recommended by a member of our school community. Often, the host family may have a child in the same grade as the visiting student.

As part of the homestay arrangements, host parents agree to provide:
• Airport pickup and return
• All meals
• Laundry services
• A private bedroom, suitable for study purposes

The international student's parents and the host parents are expected to arrive at an agreement which outlines the obligations of both parties, and the fee per month. These fees may vary, depending upon the type of accommodation the host family is providing for the student, as well as any additional services that may be required, such as daily transportation, internet access, or other needs. We suggest that a starting point might be $800 per month.

Parents who would like to apply for the homestay program, or who know of someone who might be interested, are invited to contact Ann Marie Kent, in the Admissions Office, 431-8550, or hgs.ns.ca.
