Where students flourish and teachers inspire

About Us

Every school has its own identity, feel, and spirit. We call ours the “Grammar Experience.” That phrase seems to capture the essence of the student experience at the Grammar School. It also figures prominently in the message we convey in welcoming people into our school community. Visiting our School will give you a sense of what it means to students, to staff, to parents, and to our alumni.

What is this “Grammar Experience”? It is, first and foremost, all about our students – and it is exemplified in what we might call the unique Grammar spirit. Certainly many schools have newer and shinier buildings, but we have something special. Students matter here at Grammar and they enjoy a close personal relationship with their teachers. We pride ourselves on having a truly fine teaching faculty. We understand the vital importance of nurturing that student-teacher relationship, of respecting one another, and of striving together to do our best… in academics, athletics, the arts, and community service.

The Grammar experience is more than challenging academics – maintaining high standards, completing the International Baccalaureate program, and gaining admission to the university of choice. Yes, these are clear priorities… but there is much more to life in today’s School: Passionate teachers ready to challenge you; students with confidence and independent spirits; coaches and advisors committed to striving for excellence; and close friends engaged in helping one another.

Since our humble origins in 1958, HGS has grown and emerged as one of Canada’s leading independent coeducational day schools. For more than 15 years, the Senior School has offered the full IB Diploma program, regarded as the best possible preparation for success at university. Today’s Grammar School enrols some 530 students, encompasses two campuses, and extends from Junior Primary to graduation year.

With this message comes an open invitation to see our school for yourself. Whether you scan our viewbook (pdf), visit the website, or tour the school, all of you are invited to share –for a moment at least – in the Grammar School experience.

TestimonialsBen Jain, Head Boy 2008-2009“I consider myself lucky to go to school every morning to a diverse, talented environment. I tell jokes with talented debaters, walk to class with committed basketball players, sing in musicals with aspiring actors, and study with teachers who are experts in their fields. Every day, I become more confident the school is providing me with the best possible preparation for my future, whatever that may be.”
