H1N1 Update 1

Where students flourish and teachers inspire

Arts

The Grammar School awakens in many students a genuine creative spirit and a true appreciation for the arts. From the earliest years in Primary, the Prep School places a strong emphasis on the creative arts. Our youngest pupils are introduced to music and the visual and performing arts, nurtured and developed by specialist teachers. Young voices are developed in the Prep School Choir and opportunities for creative expression through the visual arts are woven into the curriculum at every grade level from Primary to Grade 4. Pupils in Grade 1 delight in an innovative unit focusing on abstract expressionism and all classes culminate in a play in early June demonstrating the vitality of the arts. The HGS Prep Holiday Concert, the annual Poetry Festival, and the Prep Musical are highlights of every year.

The arts continue to thrive in the Middle School. Our long-standing visual arts program has students exploring art history to art practice, Over the course of the year, the walls of Tower Road Campus provide a virtual art gallery of rotating student art – impressive works ranging from Cave Paintings and Egyptian masks to variations on Warhols and Dekoonings. From the first day students enter Middle School; they are introduced to music and the opportunity to learn an instrument. Students not only learn about popular music and jazz, they are challenged to consider the intriguing possibilities of Opera. All classes study drama and each year the Middle School produces its own full-scale Shakespearean production. Students enjoy a co-curricular life featuring a Grammar Idol competition, a Jazz Café, and an annual Talent Show.

The Senior School offers electives in Dramatic Arts and Digital Imaging, appealing to students with a creative flair. Music forms an important part of student life, showcased at school assemblies and our regular Coffee Houses. Students can elect to study IB Music, which is offered in alternate years. Our Visual Arts curriculum includes courses to the IB level, offered in the magnificent Silver Arts Studio. Among our most popular student clubs and cultural activities are those catering to students with a passion for improvisation, film making, and guitar. Each year the Senior School offers a full musical production, involving many students and faculty. Our annual productions testify to the remarkable growth of the arts at HGS.
